Fred Smith Company is seeking a motivated Project Engineer or Assistant Project Manager to join our team on one of the most significant public infrastructure projects in the Triangle—the Wake Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) New Bern Avenue Project, Area 2.

This landmark project, awarded by the City of Raleigh at over $64 million
, will transform the New Bern Avenue corridor from Poole Road to Sunnybrook Road, constructing median-running dedicated bus lanes, transit stations, roadway improvements, utility relocations, multi-use paths, and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure. As North Carolina's first BRT system, this project will shape how the region moves for generations to come.

About the Role

This is a dedicated, long-term assignment on a high-profile, multi-year civil construction project. You will work closely with project leadership to coordinate both field and office operations, ensuring the project is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.

Responsibilities include:
  • Client and stakeholder interface
  • Project scheduling and schedule updates
  • Submittal and RFI management
  • Subcontractor coordination
  • Office coordination with internal support crews and project team
  • Coordination of utility relocation coordination with public and private providers
  • Cost tracking and budget support
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with turnkey civil construction projects
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills
  • Proficiency with project management and scheduling software
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field
