A registered polysomnographic technologist works under the general supervision of the department manager/lead tech to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. The registered polysomnographic technologist is credentialed in sleep technology by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT).

Responsibilities- Perform polysomnograms according to standards of the department.
- Demonstrate competency with Polysomnography, baseline, split‑night and PAP titration, MSLT, and MWT. Knowledge of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, hypopnea, respiratory effort‑related arousal, narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, parasomnias, seizures, gastric reflux, insomnia, hypoxia, and related documentation.
- Administer oxygen and/or nasal CPAP/BiPAP in accordance with physician orders. Instruct patients on proper use and care of equipment.
- Write comprehensive reports on findings, including treatment levels if used.
- Maintain, clean, calibrate, and troubleshoot equipment.
- Collect and review medical, historical, and medication information to perform the appropriate study prescribed by the physician.
- Perform neurodiagnostic testing for adolescent and adult patients and sleep disorder testing procedures for adolescent and adult patients.
- Evaluate patients’ and significant others’ educational needs and initiate appropriate teaching or referrals.
Education
- Diploma or degree in college‑level science field of polysomnography, electrodiagnostics, or completion of a degree and licensure in health care.
Experience
- Six months experience in a Sleep Disorders Center preferred.
License(s)/Certification(s)
- Registered Polysomnographic Technician or registry eligible.
- Board certified by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) within the first year of employment.
- Must become Iowa Licensed in Polysomnographic Technology under Iowa House File 203 regulations.
- BLS required.
