Primary Purpose

The Department Chair of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics serves as the Chief Administrative Officer for the department, reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Dental Medicine (CDM). Key responsibilities include overseeing the department’s academic, research, and clinical programs, as well as managing administrative functions. As a member of the faculty, teaches, conducts research and engages in service activities.

  • Chair Responsibilities:
    • Leadership duties:
      • Establishing and maintaining the department vision; establishing goals and objectives that fulfill the department’s mission and move it towards its vision; identifying and selecting tasks and projects which support achievement of goals and objectives; creating an environment and processes that will achieve the University, College and Department visions.
      • Conveying a sense of progress to those inside and outside the Department.
      • Providing both positive and negative feedback to ensure Department members meet professional standards.
      • Fostering an environment where people develop attitudes of responsibility and mentoring for others, as well as fostering and championing the ideas and visions of others.
      • Earning the trust of those inside and outside the Department.
      • Implementing processes for inclusiveness and openness in department governance.
      • Ensuring Department culture and practices maintains a student-centric foundation.
    • Manages Department’s structure, execution of plans and assessment of performance: allocation and management of resources including budgets and space; developing and updating course scheduling plans; preparing and proposing Department budgets; supervising, directing, and monitoring performance of the Department, staff, and faculty; implementing and maintaining processes associated with successful accreditation; preparing annual reports; maintaining essential records; ensuring quality of instruction and research;

      keeping curriculum up to date; implementing assessment plans.
    • Manages Faculty/Staff affairs and professional development: ensuring policies are followed; recruiting new faculty and staff; fostering a collegiate atmosphere; mentoring new faculty; supporting research and publications; supporting faculty participation in conferences; supporting grant proposals; promoting diversity and affirmative action.
    • Communicates the department’s story and needs to internal and external stakeholders, including businesses, government agencies, professional societies, civic groups, and foundations.
    • Ensures timely and professional communication of necessary information to all Department constituents, marketing the department, creating brochures and communications, keeping faculty informed of plans and policy changes, listening to concerns, encouraging faculty communication, establishing positive image and reputation, coordinating outside activities, managing advisory committees, ensuring timely correspondence, recruiting students and faculty, engaging student government, and offering additional student and faculty activities.
    • As a faculty member, teaches, does research, and engages in service activities.
    • Performs other duties, including committee participation and strategic planning.
    • May be assigned to special assignments to support projects or special needs of the college and university.
