NATURE OF WORKThe Groundskeeper performs semi‑skilled work in the maintenance, care, and modification of university grounds and landscapes. Our Groundskeepers operate electrically powered and gasoline‑powered groundskeeping equipment, utilize small hand and power tools, and perform planting, cultivating, and trimming of grounds and landscaping. They also perform maintenance on equipment, make minor repairs as directed, and support campus life through general grounds maintenance.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES- Seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outside plantings, lawns, turf, and interior flowers; inspecting plant materials for insects, disease, or damage, and identifying replacements.
- Mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, and building perimeters; weeding, thinning, and cleaning flower beds with proper tools; setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
- Keeping daily logs of watering, chemical spraying, and environmental conditions such as wind speed and direction at the time of application.
- Installing, removing, repairing, and maintaining landscape lighting, parking meters, signs, cables, chains, barricades, gates, bicycle racks, feeders, posts, fences, and rock walls; repairing streets, parking lots, athletic fields, tennis courts, track, and omni‑turf as needed.
- Removing unsightly trash and debris from public areas, raking, sweeping, bagging leaves and trash, and transporting to collection points daily.
- Emptying, cleaning, and disinfecting trash and cigarette receptacles; repairing or installing receptacles as required.
- Providing caution signs and operating leaf blowers to prevent slips on wet walkways.
- Preparing outdoor locations for visitors and vendors, painting and marking athletic fields, moving bleachers, seating, and erecting portable goals or other equipment.
- Applying chemicals safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, following mixing instructions, and correctly labeling and disposing of residual chemicals.
- Operating light vehicles (pickup trucks, tractors, street sweepers, riding mowers) and portable power tools (saws, grass trimmers, leaf blowers, sprayers, paint machines) while obeying traffic laws and wearing appropriate safety gear.
- Performing routine and preventative maintenance on equipment and cleaning tools to ensure operational readiness.
- Assisting in any other related duties as assigned.
- Reading English to understand written work orders, instructions, and chemical use information.
- Proficient in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting grounds maintenance tools and machinery.
- Identifying and eradicating disease or insect damage to plant and turf materials (preferred).
- Representing Encompass positively and maintaining professional, respectful, and cooperative interactions with supervisors, co‑workers, residents, vendors, and other departments.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean record.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Public pesticide applicator license preferred.
- At least two years of groundskeeping experience, or an associate degree in horticulture or a related field that substitutes for two years of experience.
- Knowledge of proper use and disposal of chemicals in horticulture, turf management, and floriculture preferred.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs occasionally; prolonged walking or standing; frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- Full range of motion required to operate manual, electric, or gasoline‑powered equipment.
- Accessing work areas by climbing stairs or ladders up to 20 ft.
- Work primarily outdoors year‑round; essential employees expected to report during severe weather closures.
The Groundskeeper/General Maintenance Worker is supervised by a designated supervisor and may be required to supervise student, intern, or temporary workers.
