The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Fender Construction Worker.

General Description

Performs diversified manual tasks in the repair, replacement and maintenance of bulkhead fender systems, bollards, and other seawall and dockside fixtures. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires two (2) years operation of maintenance and construction equipment or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required
  • Ability to secure and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
  • Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification card (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Preferences
  • 1+ years experience operating a boom lift
  • 1+ years experience operating a welding torch

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Transports various construction tools and equipment to work sites at the port; sets up and rigs boom truck lifting gear for fender removal, including wire straps, shackles and safety lines.

Prepares fenders for removal by disconnecting chains, backing out heavy bolts and clearing any loose damaged fender parts; may work over the side in water and utilize snorkeling equipment and a cutting torch.

Operates boom truck crane in the removal and replacement of fenders and heavy tires.

Assists contractors with the removal and replacement of fenders and large truck tires when work is outside the reach of the port boom truck and a crane is utilized; assists contractors with installation of new fender systems, as required.

Assembles and disassembles fenders at the shop utilizing various tools and equipment; fabricates new steel sections by welding and cutting; prepares and paints fender surfaces, as required.

Installs new fender assemblies by using a core drill and boring into the concrete on the outside face of the seawall; epoxies mounting hardware into the drilled holes and hangs the new fender over the wall after glue cures.

Installs mooring bollards along the berths; and rebuilds damaged fenders by disassembling the unit, cutting out damaged sections of the protector panel, and welding the new fabricated parts in place.

Conducts routine surveys of the port fendering system and reports damage or missing fenders to supervisor; performs operator pre-check and minor repairs on truck crane and forklift.

Maintains fendering parts, tools, and equipment inventory as required by Broward County; assists with other trades work as needed; and supervises unskilled assistants.

Performs related work as assigned.

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to electrical shocks; heights.
