Job Description
The Clinical Instructor at Southeast Community College (SCC) provides educational services as assigned, in accordance with general college guidelines, board policies, and administrative guidelines. The instructor is crucial to the successful accomplishment of the college’s educational goals. The instructor’s attitude, personality, knowledge, skills, and motivation contribute to an effective learning environment. Familiarity with the comprehensive community college philosophy is highly desired.
The Clinical Instructor supervises nursing students in the clinical/lab/simulation setting under the general direction of the Director of Nursing/Dean of Health Professions. This person assists classroom instructional faculty with translating nursing theory into practice, evaluates students, and makes grade recommendations. The Clinical Instructor functions under the auspices of the Iowa Board of Nursing.
The Clinical Instructor will be assigned to the West Burlington and/or Keokuk campus, with the ability to conduct clinical work at various sites throughout the college district. The position requires availability beyond a fixed schedule, including evenings and weekends, to meet work demands.
Responsibilities- Supervise the performance of nursing students in clinical, laboratory, and simulation settings.
- Assist instructional faculty in translating nursing theory into practice.
- Evaluate student performance and make grade recommendations.
- Promote a positive image for the college district.
- Provide clinical instruction in a variety of settings, adapting to diverse learning environments.
- Handle confidential matters with discretion, maintaining high professional integrity.
- Support the college’s educational goals in accordance with Iowa Board of Nursing regulations.
- Registered Nurse with active and unencumbered licensure in the state of Iowa.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or applicable field, or the commitment to pursue a nursing degree upon hiring.
- Two years of clinical nursing experience (three or more years preferred).
- Current BLS/CPR certification for healthcare providers.
- Mandatory reporter certification (adult and child abuse).
- Valid driver’s license with the physical ability to climb stairs, walk long distances, and carry heavy equipment.
- Good physical and mental health, with proof of fitnes before employment.
- Required documentation of recommended vaccines for healthcare professionals (Tdap, Hepatitis B series, MMR, Varicella, negative TB test, annual flu vaccine).
- Teaching experience and knowledge of course and curriculum development, instructional techniques, and materials for adult learners.
- Ability to use technology and instructional software, integrating technology into instruction.
- Excellent communication skills, including listening, speaking, and writing.
- Strong human relations and interpersonal skills to interact positively with diverse populations.
- Ability to make effective day‑to‑day decisions in clinical areas.
- Motivational ability to encourage students to achieve their best.
- Ability to evaluate student performance effectively.
- Adaptability to provide clinical instruction in varied clinical settings.
Good physical and mental health are required to meet the demands of clinical instruction. Proof of physical and mental fitness, along with required vaccination documentation, must be provided prior to employment.
