The Substitute School Nurse provides temporary health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. The position ensures that school health programs and emergency procedures are implemented according to Iowa Department of Education and Department of Public Health guidelines.

• Current Iowa Board Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse with valid Iowa licensure
• Current CPR/BLS and First Aid Certification
• Mandatory Reporter Certification
• Experience in school nursing, pediatric, or public health preferred

• Upholds school district health policies related to student health, safety, and confidentiality.
• Maintains accurate and complete confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.

• Follows the Individual Health Plan to assist all school staff in meeting students’ health needs.
• Follows the plan of care and health needs of Health plans are listed in the nurse binder with student health files.
• Monitors for outbreaks of infectious and/or communicable diseases and works with appropriate public health agencies when necessary.
• Provides first aid and emergency care when required.
• Follows district protocols for accident, injury, and illness documentation.
• Administers medication listed by the school nurse and documented on the medication administration record in compliance with district policy and physician orders.
• If necessary consults with administration, parent/guardian, and school personnel to keep the school informed about pertinent health problems and needs of students.
• Supervises the administration of health services by non‑licensed personnel as appropriate.
• Monitors, treats employees with injuries.
• Supports students’ physical and emotional well‑being during the school day.
• Follows the nurse schedule shared with the substitute nurse along with Power School.
• Reports to building administration.
• Other duties as assigned.

On an on‑call basis during the regular school year when the assigned school nurse is unavailable.

Bending, carrying, climbing, driving, lifting, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, walking. Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

$130.50 per day as a substitute nurse.
