Job Qualifications

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools requires a temporary full-time School Counselor to support our schools and students. This position will begin as soon as possible through to June 25, 2026; with possibility of extension. This assignment is for experienced candidates who are able to work with students grade 7 - 12 at Father Mercredi Catholic High School.

Responsibilities
  • Having and maintaining a high level of knowledge regard current and developing best practices in the field of student mental health and wellness
  • Working with their School Administration team to assess crises as they arise and developing an appropriate plan for supporting those impacted by the crisis
  • Provide training and education to staff in using various universal instructional approaches and strategies for communication and social skills, friendship/relationship development, conflict resolution and self-regulation to build students' resiliency and independence through a trauma informed lens
  • Provide small group and individual support for students who require communication and social skills, friendship/relationship development, self-regulation to build student success and independence
  • Referrals for therapeutic supports to other community agencies who support children and families who have children with emotional and mental health needs
  • Will supplement the religion/health programs, enhance student social skills, perspective taking and empathy development in whole class or small group settings
  • Coordinates development of Instructional Support Plans, and ensures regular and timely completion of behavior plans for students with behaviour disorders
  • Demonstrates compassion and uses a variety of effective communication techniques when communicating to staff, parents, and community agencies
  • Having the ability to work independently and make decisions while keeping the supervisors apprised of sensitive situations
  • Consulting with the Division Psychologist and/or other school counsellors and engaging in the ethical decision-making process when encountering ethical concerns
  • Advocating for students' wellness within the school and the community to increase education and awareness of mental health and wellness
  • Possesses the ability to work independently and make decisions while keeping the supervisor apprised of sensitive situations
  • Providing career guidance and scheduling for high school students
  • Providing post-secondary information, including scholarships, applications, employment opportunities, etc.
Qualifications

The successful applicant should either hold or be working toward a Master in Guidance and Counselling or a Master of Social Work with advanced practice in the assessment and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders/conditions. They must be eligible for or in the process of obtaining membership in an applicable accrediting body.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to provide a Criminal Reference Check and a Vulnerable Sector Check. FMCSD will contact past and present employers for references. All FMCSD employees are expected to be computer literate; this includes fluency with e-mail, Internet, Google Suite and MS Office.
