Terracon is seeking a Water Sampler / Instrumentation Technician (Junior to Intermediate) to support environmental monitoring and data collection programs across industrial and municipal projects. This position combines field-based water sampling with routine monitoring and documentation of geotechnical and environmental instrumentation. You will work both independently and alongside experienced technologists and engineers to support ongoing monitoring programs and regulatory requirements. This role is ideal for early- to mid-career professionals looking to build or expand their experience in environmental fieldwork and instrumentation.
Location& Work Environment
- Primarily based in Fort Mc Murray
- Fieldwork may include 10–12 hour day or night shifts, depending on project requirements
- Work environments include active mining sites, tailings areas, and remote monitoring locations
- Work is conducted in varying weather and site conditions
- Collect ground and surface water samples in accordance with established procedures
- Ensure proper storage, handling, and transportation of samples
- Monitor and record water levels and water quality data
- Read, record, and document data from field instrumentation including slope inclinometers and vibrating wire piezometers (VWPs)
- Conduct routine site visits to monitor instrumentation performance and identify irregularities
- Maintain detailed and accurate field notes, logs, and documentation
- Perform data entry and support data management requirements
- Install, inspect, and maintain environmental monitoring equipment and instrumentation
- Troubleshoot minor equipment or instrumentation issues in the field
- Track and manage field equipment inventory and supplies
- Safely operate company vehicles in industrial and off-road environments
- Adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and site-specific requirements
- Support positive working relationships with team members and clients
- Diploma or degree in Environmental Sciences, Earth Science, Water Resource Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and field experience
- 1+ years of experience in a technical field-based role is considered an asset
- Legal authorization to work in Canada
- Valid driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
- Ability to perform physical fieldwork and pass a fitness-for-work assessment
- Willingness to work in safety-sensitive environments and meet drug and alcohol testing requirements
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field documentation
- Ability to manage schedules and work both independently and within a team
- Strong communication skills with an aptitude for responding to the needs of clients and team members
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, including knowledge of safety regulations and experience following site procedures
- Experience with environmental and geotechnical monitoring instrumentation
- Previous oil sands or mining site experience
- Ability to operate off-road vehicles (e.g., Argo)
- Safety certifications (BSO/CSO, H2S)
- Off-road or winter driving experience
- Interest in professional membership (ASET or similar)
