Overview
Position: Protection Services Officer
The Salvation Army is a faith- and values-based organization that serves communities in Canada and Bermuda. This role focuses on safety and security of clients and property, through regular rounds and appropriate action to manage critical incidents.
Responsibilities- Safety and Security: Conduct regular building/Thrift Store patrols.
- Understand and be aware of emergency/disaster procedures and maintain communications during emergencies by relaying instructions to visitors and staff by radio or telephone.
- Waste removal handled in a safe/secure manner.
- Provide security at Soup Kitchens.
- In keeping with OH&S regulations, ensure obstructions are removed from doors and pathways; document for OH&S committee as necessary.
- Provide security safety to all staff, including Thrift Store customers and clients.
- Work with Mat & Shelter staff to ensure criteria for each Shelter is followed.
- Communication: Develop reports and keep a detailed log of incidents and emergencies to report to MU administration.
- Reception duties at the dry Shelter; meet visitors and direct to proper department.
- Provide effective customer care service for visitors; promote and uphold the corporate mission and values.
- Other Duties As
Required:
May assist with the bread/sweets run from local stores to the Centre in the absence of the Facilities Operator Assistant. - Loading/unloading furniture pallets, etc.
- Accept Thrift Store donations during/after hours.
- Assist Facilities Operator Supervisor/Assistant with duties, when required.
- Internal: MU staff and officers.
- External: Clients.
- Report to Facilities Operator.
- Most times other staff will be present.
- Will deal with Shelter individuals who are under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
- Will encounter angry individuals and verbally abusive behavior.
- Will encounter individuals with alternative lifestyles.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
- Exposure to sharp objects and other dangerous items.
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
Education And Experience QualificationsEducation, Qualifications and
Certifications:
- A current Security Services License as per Alberta Legislation.
- Grade 12 diploma and at least 1 year of related experience.
- First Aid/CPR Certification.
- Capable of lifting 50+ lbs and in good physical health.
- Valid Driver’s License - Class 5.
- Clean abstract & Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector upon hire.
- Non-violent Crisis Intervention Training and understanding of Occupational Health & Safety Policies & Emergency Preparedness would be an asset.
- One to two years of prior related experience, including security and/or concierge experience.
- Ability to render first aid and attend to visitors' comfort pending arrival of 911 (e.g., illness, seizures, injuries, fainting, intoxication).
- Working knowledge of fire alarm systems, card access control systems, locking mechanisms, public address systems, and CCTV.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and fire evacuation plans; ability to evacuate the building under direction of the Chief Fire Warden or Alternate.
- Knowledge of WHMIS, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and the Trespass to Property Act; proficiency with common software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet).
- Ability to respond to information requests verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
- Tact and patience in dealing with irregularities and incidents; maintain good public relations and use authority as a last resort.
- Ability to remain composed in stressful and potentially threatening situations.
- Conflict resolution skills to reach peaceful solutions in volatile situations.
- Ability to promote and influence compliance with related legislation and standards.
- Ability to gather information and evidence; analytical skills to identify problems and recommend solutions.
- Ability to evaluate observed irregularities and incidents and take immediate action to inform, remind, and persuade visitors regarding safety rules.
- Positive attitude and strong team-player attributes.
This is a temporary fixed-term contract.
Weekly scheduled hours: 40.
Compensation And Additional DetailsThe target hiring range for this position is $23.27 to $29.09 with a maximum of $34.90. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
