Responsibilities

NSA conducts world‑class research to support Signals Intelligence and Cybersecurity missions and the broader Intelligence Community. We seek mathematicians or physicists with expertise in quantum algorithms and/or quantum error correction to advance the U.S. Government’s strategic efforts in quantum computing. In this role you will:

  • Engage with NSA’s and the U.S. Government’s quantum computing initiatives, identifying key research problems.
  • Conduct research to support NSA and U.S. government goals in quantum computing.
  • Demonstrate experience with quantum algorithms or quantum error correction through publications, operational solutions, or other evidence of advanced expertise. Prototype and implement solutions in computer code or scripting using one or more of the following languages: C/C++, Rust, Python, Sage Math, MAGMA.

While the primary focus is quantum computing, successful candidates may also contribute to other mathematics research areas such as linear algebra, number theory, probability, statistics, analysis, graph theory, cryptomathematics, algorithm development, computer network security, or vulnerability analysis.

Job Summary

NSAs Mathematics Research Group conducts world‑class research with the objective of developing new and innovative techniques to support our Signals Intelligence and Cybersecurity missions, as well as the broader Intelligence Community (IC). The group focuses on mathematics research in a wide range of technical areas, including quantum computing, cryptanalysis, cryptography, vulnerability research, machine learning, statistical analysis, machine learning security, network defense, digital forensics, and graph algorithms.

Candidates should have strong computational skills and experience with programming/scripting languages.

Qualifications
  • Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related STEM field.
  • Minimum 24 semester credit hours (or 36 credit hours on a quarter system) in advanced mathematics courses.
  • Relevant experience with design, development, use, and evaluation of mathematical models, methods, or techniques. Experience may include network engineering, computer science, physics, software engineering, electrical engineering.
  • For Senior and Expert levels, leadership experience may count for up to half the experience requirement.
  • Entry‑level entry requirements:
    Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of relevant experience, Master's degree plus 1 year of relevant experience, or Doctoral degree with no experience.
  • Senior entry requirements:
    Bachelor's degree plus 6 years, Master's degree plus 4 years, or Doctoral degree plus 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Expert entry requirements:
    Bachelor's degree plus 9 years, Master's degree plus 7 years, or Doctoral degree plus 5 years of experience.
Pay, Benefits and Work Schedule

Salary is based on education level, years of experience, and relevant qualifications. Salary range: $105,262 – $197,200 (Full Performance, Senior, Expert). NSA offers a comprehensive benefits package. This is a full‑time position (Monday‑Friday, 8 hr/day, flexible between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.).
