Applied Research Mathematician / Mathematical Statistician - Entry to Experienced Level (Maryland)
NSA’s mathematics and statistics community is integral to our mission of protecting the nation. We seek mathematicians and mathematical statisticians with diverse expertise—including algebra, combinatorics, Fourier analysis, operations research, graph analytics, regression, machine learning, exploratory data analysis, stochastic processes, statistical modeling, forecasting, and cryptography—to solve complex intelligence problems both offensively and defensively.
Job SummaryNew hires join the Mathematics Development Program (MDP), a three‑year, on‑the‑job training initiative that offers 6‑month rotations across NSA offices, mentorship, and coursework in cryptologic mathematics, statistical data mining, and related subjects. Graduates select a first assignment from a wide range of positions spanning theoretical and applied mathematics and statistics.
Responsibilities• Contribute subject‑matter expertise and critical thinking across offensive and defensive missions.
• Develop, test, and evaluate mathematical models, algorithms, and statistical methods for intelligence analysis.
• Mentor and collaborate with teammates in interdisciplinary teams.
• Participate in hands‑on training, seminars, conferences, and professional organization activities.
- Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related STEM field.
- Minimum 24 semester hours (36 quarter credits) of advanced mathematics coursework.
- Entry/Developmental:
Bachelor’s degree, no experience. - Full Performance:
Bachelor’s + 3 yrs relevant experience or Master’s + 1 yr experience, or Doctorate + no experience. - Experience in model development, algorithm design, or software engineering is preferred.
Salary range: $87,362 – $153,082 (Entry/Developmental to Full Performance). Full‑time, Monday‑Friday with flexible core hours (6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.). Candidates will serve a two‑year DCIPS trial period (one year for veterans' preference). Benefits include a comprehensive package and training opportunities.
