. The Middle School Counselor is responsible for working collaboratively with the school counseling team to develop, implement and manage a comprehensive school counseling program to serve the academic, social and career development needs of students enrolled in FMSD. The primary purpose of the comprehensive school counseling program is to support the instructional and academic goals of FMSD.

SupervisesStudent helpers and parent volunteers.
Performance Responsibilities- Register and schedule students new to the school and orient them to school procedures and the school’s varied opportunities for learning.
- Aid students in course and subject selection.
- Work with students who experience academic difficulties.
- Work to prevent students from dropping out of school.
- Plan guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students.
- Make recommendations for summer programs.
- Arrange for tutors and summer school work.
- Obtain and disseminate occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations.
- Help students evaluate career interests and choices.
- Organize and conduct annual “Career Day”.
- Work with students on an individual basis to solve personal problems related to home, family, health, and emotional adjustment by providing individual and group counseling.
- Confere with parents whenever necessary.
- Promote the guidance program to the community.
- Provide in‑service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
- Assist with testing in certain areas.
- Provide individual, group, and career testing.
- Develop and coordinate scheduling for the school year.
- Participate in assigned school duties.
- Provide classroom guidance activities.
- Coordinate 5th grade orientation and site visits.
- Work collaboratively with the high school counselors to plan the rising 9th grade IGPs.
- Respond to crisis situations when appropriate (e.g., emotional, physical, and health).
- Attend and participate in local, county, and state networking programs for educational purposes.
- Provide new school year orientation for students and parents.
- Participate in IEP, SWAT and grade team meetings.
Terms of Employment: 200‑Day Contract. Salary paid on the Teacher Salary Schedule.
Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the board’s policy on evaluation of professional staff.
