Overview
Speech Therapist - PRN - Req # | Valley View Medical Center
Responsibilities- The Speech Language Pathologist administers, organizes and plans the activities of the department to ensure effective speech pathology evaluation and treatment for inpatients, outpatients and acute rehab patients of all age groups and cultural backgrounds exhibiting speech, language, hearing or swallowing disorders.
- Provides diagnostic and therapeutic services, patient/family counseling, and maintains systematic records in accordance with professional, JCAHO, and CARF guidelines.
- Maintains quality care for all patients through interaction with hospital personnel in a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.
- Provides assistance where communication barriers exist due to speech/language disabilities to enable each individual to reach a maximum level of independence.
- Provides evaluation and setup of treatment programs for all patients referred to Speech Language Pathology; provides speech language therapy treatment to referred patients.
- Writes and reviews patient progress reports, including charting and reports to referring physicians; consults with other rehab team members regarding communication pathways to maximize patient teaching in rehab techniques.
- Provides correct information on Medicare, Medi Cal and all other forms; provides correct statistics and billing information for Speech Language Therapy patients.
- Assesses and manages swallowing disorders in coordination with other departments; assists with preparation of and monitors departmental budget.
- Attends hospital and community meetings as appropriate and serves on various committees; performs pure-tone hearing screening; develops, implements, maintains, and reviews policies and procedures for department services (administrative, clinical and CQI) and prepares necessary reports.
- Orients and trains new and continuing staff regarding scope and needs of the Speech Language Therapy Department and participates in continuing education programs to enhance skills and knowledge; trains, supervises and evaluates graduate speech pathology students; supports and actively participates in hospital quality-assurance and in-service programs; performs other duties as assigned.
- Degree / Licensure / Certification / Registration
:
Requires Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited program. Requires a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) and/or eligible for licensing by the state board of Speech Pathology and Audiology. Requires a current and valid Arizona license/certification as a Speech Language Pathologist. Current BLS required. Requires continuing education and training to maintain Arizona licensure. - Special Skills & Qualifications
: - Must possess the ability to delegate tasks to subordinate team members and oversee their performance. Must have strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Effective human relations skills are required for interfacing with team members, all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families and other contacts.
- Must possess the ability to effectively function in a stressful environment. Must possess the ability to remain on feet for extended periods of time; and perform the essential duties of the position. Must possess the ability to use the following equipment:
Telephone / Overhead Paging System / Fax Machine / Calculator / Computer / Wheelchair / Hospital Beds. - Must be able to work any scheduled shifts. Must be willing to work periodic overtime and be prepared to take call as requested. Completed Competency Based Skills Checklists for unit(s) assigned.
