Overview
Under the direction of the Director of Infection Prevention, Employee Health and Wellness, the Employee Health nurse is responsible for providing direct care to employees using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Performs occupational health related functions for employees such as pre‑employment and annual health screenings, administering immunizations, performs urine drug screen testing, managing workplace injuries, and developing wellness/safety programs to prevent illness and reduce lost work time.
Maintains detailed, confidential employee health records in compliance with HIPAA and ensures the organization meets all federal andћи state medical surveillance requirements.
- Assessment of employee injuries and initiates proper first aid, if applicable.
- Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and utilization of critical thinking skills in the administration of medications and vaccinations.
- Performs occupational health functions for employees, to include drug screening, immunizations, orders for laboratory testing, measuring vital signs, height & weight and follow-up of employees with blood/body fluid exposures.
- Completes pre‑employment process for new employees, to include urine drug screening and orders for lab testing.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Receives incoming telephone calls and greets callers, answering questions when able or referring to appropriate person when needed.
- Maintains department’s inventory of supplies and medicines.
- Assists with employee health record maintenance, to include documentation of immunization consents and filing consents, records and laboratory results.
- Developing/implementing wellness initiatives and health education.
- Lead annual influenza initiatives by promoting and providing flu vaccination, emphasizing infection control, educating staff on vaccine importance, tracking coverage and managing declination forms.
- Create and maintain current policies and procedures according to best practice following federal and state guidance.
Education Required: Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing
License, Certification and/or Registration:
- Currrent Alabama or Multi‑State nursing licensure
- BCLS required within the orientation period
- Certification in Occupational Health Nursing (e.g.,sprites COHN) preferred
Experience: 5 years nursing experience (emergency, occ health, urgent care experience preferred)
Additional Skills/Abilities: Strong communication, counseling, problem‑solving, and confidentiality.
