Join Mercy Hospital Springfields Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Program. The program is designed for those seeking certification as professional chaplains or for individuals for whom CPE is a requirement for ordination or clergy endorsement.

The CPE program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) and complies with its current Standards. ACPE is nationally recognized as an accrediting agency in the field of clinical pastoral education by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

• Develop and practice pastoral care skills in traditional, non‑traditional, and institutional settings.
• Provide ministry to patients, families, co‑workers, churches or parishes, and larger communities.
• Ensure placement agreements at non‑Mercy entities adhere to Mercy Hospital Springfield CPE Program requirements.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent pastoral experience, completed or close to completion.
• Enrollment in Mercy Hospital Springfield CPE Residency Program.
• Completed CPE application and admission interview with qualified interviewer(s) to determine readiness for CPE.
• Acceptance by an accredited CPE center.
• Payment of application fee as set by center.
• Pastoral or ministry experience.
• Demonstrated ability to grow in Mercy Culture, reflection, listening, self‑disclosure, ethics and values (including a theological framework), compassion regardless of cultural, religious, age or other differences, sense of service, and relationality.
• Computer skills including general computer competence, navigation of Epic charting system, census searches and consults & assessments, Microsoft Word, e‑mail, database entry, and use of search engines.
