Job SummaryFort Valley State University Cooperative Extension Program (FVSU-CEP) seeks a Health and Nutrition Outreach Specialist to manage the Health & Wellness program within the Family and Consumer Sciences Department. The role involves planning and designing community-based programs to support county staff and the Mobile Health Unit, and promoting nutrition education across Georgia.
Essential Duties / Responsibilities- Provide leadership in developing, implementing, and evaluating nutrition and wellness programs for community-based implementation.
- Lead research/evidence‑based statewide extension programs that address the needs of limited‑resource, diverse and socially disadvantaged audiences.
- Collaborate with county staff, program leaders, and health‑oriented campus departments, and federal and local agencies to address chronic disease, obesity prevention, and health equity.
- Deliver training and educational support materials for county‑based staff and their clientele, integrating public health policies, systems, and environmental changes (PSEs).
- Create nutrition education materials such as curricula, fact sheets, articles, and healthy recipes for community outreach.
- Develop proposals to secure funding to expand program areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master of Science in human nutrition, public health or health education, chronic disease prevention, food science, or a related field.
- At least three years of program development experience in Cooperative Extension, nonprofit, or private sector.
- Doctorate degree in any of the aforementioned fields.
- Registered Dietitian credential.
- Familiarity with diverse program delivery methods for youth and adult audiences, integrating development principles into educational activities.
- Knowledge of MyPlate, Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and other evidence‑based nutrition resources.
- Experience working with rural and low‑income populations.
- Strong verbal and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of work‑related information.
- Proficiency with modern electronic technology (computers, Microsoft Office, texting, video, audio).
- Willingness to continue education to enhance job proficiency.
- Typical climate‑controlled office environment.
- Travel required; occasional overnight travel for trainings and conferences.
- Evening, night, or weekend work occasionally.
- Working outdoors at farmers’ markets, health fairs, and community events.
- Sit using a computer/monitor for extended periods.
- Stand or walk occasionally as required for program deliveries.
- Reach with hands and arms frequently.
- Lift or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 40 pounds.
