The purpose of this position is to perform technical working inspecting building constructions for compliance with Florida Building Code, under general supervision of the Chief Building Official, or their designee. Employees in this classification are responsible for interpreting and enforcing Federal, State, and Local codes, ordinances and regulations related to either the electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or structural discipline. The position is responsible for performing field inspections of work in progress or completed work, issuing notices of violations for non‑conformance, and re‑inspecting when deficiencies are corrected.

- Inspects buildings in the process of construction, alteration or repair for compliance with applicable City, County, and State code requirements.
- Ensures that materials are installed and that buildings are built in substantial compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Conducts inspections on existing buildings for hazardous conditions; when hazardous conditions exist, issues appropriate notices and follows up to ensure the conditions are abated per applicable codes and regulations.
- Performs final inspections; issues warnings and stop‑work orders as necessary when construction is not in compliance with regulations regarding methods and/or materials.
- Testifies in court on code violation cases.
- Answers telephone inquiries from the public regarding codes and ordinances.
- Answers questions from citizens, contractors, and builders.
- Prepares reports and maintains records of work performed.
- Investigates complaints and takes appropriate action; follows up and provides updates to the Chief Building Official or designee.
- Assists in the review and evaluation of building plans for compliance with all applicable codes.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three (3) years of experience in the related discipline (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or structural).
- State of Florida certification or registration as a contractor.
- Valid Standard Inspector Certification in the appropriate discipline (electrical, mechanical, plumbing, or structural).
- Certification by the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals as requested by the State of Florida Certification by the State or Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board, within one (1) year of hire.
- Valid State of Florida driver license.
