Position: Special Education | 6.5hr Deaf & Hard of Hearing Interpreter @ Lane Middle School
JOB DESCRIPTION
Provide voice to sign and sign to voice interpreting and other support services for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students; provide translating, tutorial and instructional support services to meet the needs of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school. Incumbents must be able to interpret using Signing Exact English (SEE)/ American Sign Language (ASL) method (receptive and expressive). Possess an Educational Interpreting Performance Assessment (EIPA). EIPA must be a minimum score of 3.5 and/or incumbent may hold a certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. Prefer candidate with previous experience working with students as special needs.
Candidate must be flexible to meet the changing needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, relate well with students, staff and parents. Candidate is required by Indiana Department of Education to participate in training to earn a minimum of 36 Professional Growth Points (PGP) every 2 years. Incumbents applying for an Alternative Functional Programs must pass level 1 of the FWCS Sign Language Assessment.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS
Interpret and transliterate for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students to reinforce and follow‑up instructional concepts in various subject areas utilizing sign language; interpret from spoken language into sign language and from sign language into spoken language; must follow the Indiana State Board of Education Educational Interpreter Code of Ethics.Provide interpretation services to facilitate communications among students, faculty, staff, parents and others; utilize appropriate register of the language and intent of the speaker; interpret, explain and assure student understanding of instructional directions.Provide expressive and receptive interpretation and transliteration; interpret for classroom activities, meetings, conferences, counseling functions, field trips, assemblies, uncaptioned films, videos, daily announcements and various other events and activities.Assist teachers with various instructional activities for individual or small groups of special education students; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples and other instructional supports.Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials.Provide behavioral supports for students in the classroom and other school facilities according to approved procedures; monitor students outdoor activities as required; monitor and report progress regarding student behavior.Interpret questions, responses, comments, explanations and other communications between students, faculty, staff and others.Escort students to and from buses, classes and other locations as assigned; push student wheelchairs; lift students in and out of wheelchairs and other equipment; load and unload students on and off of buses as required.Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas; assist students with handling educational materials; assist student with mobility needs and other self‑care activities as required.Confer with students, teachers and administrators concerning instructional functions, interpretation services, educational progress and related issues, needs and activities; participate in the IEP process as assigned.Participate in yearly Sign Language Assessment conducted by FWCS Department of Special Education to Advancement on the pay scale; attend and participate in various meetings, conferences, trainings and in‑services as assigned.Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.PROBATIONARY PERIOD
