Position: Towles | 5hr Montessori Classroom Assistant Grades 1-3 | Intermediate

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The instructional Assistant will support student learning using Montessori materials and district models in small group and one-on-one instruction. Successful candidate must be able to sit on the floor with students during some activities. This person shall support procedures, policies, and discipline within the classroom and building.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidate must have a high school diploma or GED. Prefer experience working with Montessori program; counseling and computer skills helpful and must have a strong desire to see students succeed. Must have a sincere concern for youth, a strong work ethic and the ability to positively motivate students.

If selected for an interview, candidate must provide proof of education at time of interview (official transcripts and/or Para Pro results)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment;

    monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects;

    provide instructional support to various teachers.

  • Assist students in completing classroom assignments, homework and projects in various subject areas;

    assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.

  • Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities such as preparing, typing, duplicating and filing instructional materials;

    grade student tests and assignments and record grades;

    maintain student records and files as assigned.

  • Assist teachers with implementing lesson plans;

    confer with the teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs;

    explain and assure student understanding of classroom assignment and homework instructions.

  • Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom according to approved procedures;

    monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required;

    monitor and report progress regarding student performance and behavior.

  • Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned by the position;

    assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition as required;

    assist students with spelling and writing exercises and assignments.

  • Provide classroom support to the teacher by preparing and setting up work areas, decorations, posters and displays, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials.

  • Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures;

    maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly and clean manner.

  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.

  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
    • New employees must successfully complete their probationary period to be eligible to apply for posted positions.
    • Employees must remain in their current position a minimum of sixty (60) calendar days to be eligible to apply for any non-lateral posted position.
    • Current non-probationary employees may only apply for lateral positions at the end of each school year.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. The employee is required to have dexterity of hands and fingers. The employee is required to sit or stand for extended periods of time. They may be occasionally required to bend at the waist, kneel or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

    While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is seated or walking  incumbent will be required to lift, carry and/or push students weighing 25 pounds or more in wheelchairs as assigned. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
