Special Education Assistant, Special Needs / Learning Disabilities
Typical assignments range from 3 hour to 5 hours per day. Working hours typically occur between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm.
SUBSTITUTE DUTIES AND COMPENSATIONSubstitute School Assistants have the option to work assignments for the following types of staff positions, subject to district staffing needs:
- School Assistant $14.16
- Special Education Assistant $15.22
- Secretarial/Media Clerk $14.16
- Nutrition Services $14.73
Substitute school assistants are encouraged to work a minimum of 8 assignments per month during the school year. Substitute school assistants are not limited in the number of assignments accepted each week.

- Diligent in maintaining communication with the Substitute Office regarding assignments and availability.
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities required to provide general assistance in school settings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSSchool Assistant Assignments: Assist a certified teacher in facilitating instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment. Assist students in classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas. Assist students by answering questions and providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance. Observe and implement positive intervention strategies with students in the classroom according to approved procedures.
Monitor students during outdoor and recess activities as required. Maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner. Perform related duties as assigned by Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
Special Education Assistant Assignments: Assist a certified teacher in facilitating instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom environment. Assist students in classroom assignments, homework, and projects in various subject areas. Assist students by answering questions and providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance. Assist students with performing daily living and self‑care activities as assigned;
depending on the needs of the student, this may include assisting with lifting, diapering, toileting, grooming, and mobility needs. Accompany and assist students in mainstreamed classes as assigned. Escort students to and from buses and classes; push student wheelchairs; lift students in and out of wheelchairs. Provide behavioral supports for students in the classroom according to established policies and procedures;
monitor students during outdoor activities and field trips as required. Assist students with performing and developing independent living, organizational, communication, social, and self‑help skills as assigned; assist students with handling educational materials; assist students with eating activities as needed. Maintain classroom and other assigned areas in a safe, orderly, and clean manner. Perform related duties as assigned by Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
Secretarial/Media Clerk Assignments: Assist with a variety of secretarial, clerical, or media center tasks including, but not limited to, answering phones, receiving visitors, entering data on computers, organizing records and files, and maintaining a safe, orderly, and clean work area. Perform related duties as assigned by Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
Nutrition Services Assignments: Assist with preparing and serving food items according to established procedures and standards. Safely operate standard food service equipment. Assist with cleaning and maintaining food service facilities and equipment. Perform related duties as assigned by Administrator to meet the particular needs of the building/unit.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The incumbent is required to lift, carry, push, or pull students weighing 50 pounds or more as directed, and may be required to bend, kneel, twist, or reach overhead.
The position may require standing for extended periods, speaking and hearing regularly, and handling tasks in outside weather or cold temperatures.
