Phlebotomist

This part-time Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection while supporting smooth workflow in a fast-paced patient service environment. You will collect, process, and store specimens according to established procedures, assist with troubleshooting and training, and help maintain accurate records and compliance with safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws (venipuncture) using straight and butterfly needles on a broad patient population, including pediatric through geriatric patients.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Label specimen tubes accurately and match them to laboratory requisition forms to ensure correct patient and test identification.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Prepare and package specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity and chain of custody.
  • Store specimen samples at appropriate temperatures, place samples in correct collection containers or tubes, and follow all procedures required for proper transport.
  • Update and maintain patient information and specimen records accurately in the system, including data entry tasks.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support laboratory operations.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians orders to ensure proper test performance and specimen handling.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory result information to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and quality standards.
  • Attend annual department trainings and participate in ongoing education related to phlebotomy and laboratory procedures.
  • Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues, recommend process improvements, and support training of other staff as needed.
Essential Skills
  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to draw and process specimens independently.
  • Proven experience performing blood draws on pediatric through geriatric patient populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Experience with blood draws, specimen handling, labeling, sample preparation, and sample storage.
  • Ability to manage patient specimens accurately, including proper identification, handling, and documentation.
  • Competence in using a centrifuge and handling blood samples and other biological specimens.
  • Strong data entry skills and accuracy in updating patient and laboratory information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High school diploma and/or GED completion.
  • Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced setting while maintaining high accuracy and attention to detail.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Phlebotomy certification is not required but related training or coursework is beneficial.
  • Experience working in laboratory, blood bank, or biobank environments.
  • Background in medical assisting or patient-facing clinical roles.
  • Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic medical record or laboratory information systems.
  • Experience handling a variety of patient specimens, including blood, urine, fecal, and other biological samples.
  • Comfort working with pediatric patients as well as older adults, demonstrating patience and clear communication.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills to interact professionally with patients and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to attend and participate in annual department trainings and ongoing professional development.
Work Environment

Phlebotomists in this role work in Patient Service Center (PSC) locations and are typically assigned to a specific site, remaining stationary with occasional floating to other locations as needed. Current openings are in multiple locations within the region, including areas such as Fort Wayne, La Grange, Kendallville, Auburn, Warsaw, and Columbia City.
