Under the direction of the Senior Electrical Inspector, the Electrical Inspector is responsible for enforcing electrical building codes in Allen County. This position is Covered as defined by The Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Essential Functions
  • Performs field inspections of commercial and residential electrical projects for compliance with building codes and design requirements, issuing notice of violation and/or corrective action if necessary.
  • Works with contractors, designers and owners regarding code requirements, explaining, gaining cooperation, and ensuring compliance for all corrections and violations.
  • Reviews routing requests and prepares reports of inspection findings, complaints and follow‑up visits.
  • Receives, investigates and resolves special complaints and problems concerning electrical systems.
  • Performs follow‑up inspections of sites in violation of codes to determine if compliance has been met.
  • Interprets, understands and explains all pertinent information concerning electrical installation and construction requirements, including local and state codes.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED with more than eight years of experience working with electrical systems.
  • Valid Journeyman’s License in electrical or Allen County Contractor License, or Valid Inspector Certification (or equivalent from another jurisdiction requiring a minimum of four years as an electrical apprentice and four years as an electrical journeyman).
  • Availability to be on call 24 hours for two weeks per year after the probationary period.
  • Valid Driver’s License to perform field inspections utilizing a county vehicle.
  • Ability to understand and communicate electrical codes to contractors and owners.
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
  • Basic math and measuring skills using tape measures and levels.
Performance Expectations

The Electrical Inspector is expected to perform accurate field inspections, ensuring compliance with building codes and effectively communicating with contractors to resolve violations. The role requires maintaining detailed records and providing clear guidance on code requirements. The work is complex and broad in scope, requiring sound judgment to apply the most relevant guidelines, particularly when investigating complaints related to electrical systems.

Strong communication and technical skills are essential for interpreting complex codes and resolving issues. Additionally, the inspector must maintain a valid license, be available for on‑call duties and handle tasks with professionalism and accuracy.

Responsibility

The Electrical Inspector provides substantial contributions when explaining and guiding state and local codes. Deviations from guidelines must be referred to the supervisor. Work is reviewed for soundness of judgment and conclusions.

Personal Work Relationships

The Electrical Inspector maintains frequent communication with other county employees, other county and government agencies, contractors and the general public when conducting inspections and explaining, interpreting and enforcing codes.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands

The Electrical Inspector performs field inspections that expose the inspector to various weather conditions and physical hazards normally associated with construction sites and other inspection areas. Frequent typing, attention to detail, monitoring equipment, detailed inspection, and transcription/proofreading are required. The work requires lifting, reaching overhead, kneeling and climbing ladders with frequent bending, walking on uneven surfaces, and exposure to noise and dangerous equipment.

Licensing
