Position: Bishop Dwenger Bus Driver (Fort Wayne, IN)

Bus Driver (Part-Time)

Job Description: To safely transport students to events during the school day and after school hours. Job is flexible on days and times. Drivers are under the supervision of the school’s Transportation Director.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Obtain an Indiana CDL Class B
  • Take four written tests at the local BMV:
    • General knowledge
    • Passenger transport (P endorsement)
    • Air brake
    • School bus (S endorsement)
  • Complete a DOT physical exam (may be done at Parkview Occupational Health locations; forms pre-filled at Transportation Office, fax to State). Valid for 2 years.
  • Take CDL skills tests: pre‑trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on‑road driving, using a bus of the same configuration.
  • Complete a 3‑day Indiana Department of Education school bus safety class (state‑required, free).
  • Complete 8 hours of observed bus driving and 4 hours of bus observation; submit hours to Transportation Office for state submission.
  • Pass a DOT drug screen and enter FMCSA Clearinghouse database.
Testing and Certification Details

Pre‑trip Inspection: Evaluate bus safety, conduct inspection inside and outside, explain components to examiner.

Basic Vehicle Control (closed course): Move bus forward, backward, and turn within a defined area marked with traffic lanes, cones, or barriers.

On‑road Test: Drive in a variety of traffic situations: left/right turns, intersections, railroad crossings, curves, grades, single/multi‑lane roads, streets, highways, pick‑up/drop‑off stops.

After Passing All Required Tests: Bring CDL permit, skills test receipt, and DOT physical paperwork to BMV to receive official CDL license.

Once all training and documentation steps are completed, the Transportation Office must keep copies of all documents on file for ISP audits.
