Overview

GP-0602-15 – This position is located at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, Fort Cavazos, Killeen, TX. Fort Cavazos is a 214,968‑acre installation, the largest active‑duty armored post in the U.S. Armed Forces, and a premier training site for heavy forces. It is 60 miles north of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Responsibilities
  • Employee performs duties as a Practitioner and Consultant in Psychiatry with emphasis on problems of all levels of complexity and must bring knowledge and experience (ideally working with the military population) providing treatment services in any capacity including inpatient, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, routine outpatient, and consultation liaison services. The incumbent provides continuing follow‑up care for chronic inpatients and outpatients with acute disorders and complications such as psychosis, organic brain syndrome, substance abuse/addictions, and other acute illnesses.

    The employee is expected to exercise initiative and sound judgment in establishing evaluation techniques, developing treatment and rehabilitation plans, and providing appropriate therapeutic treatment services. The role includes examining and conducting thorough studies of presenting patients, evaluating laboratory and clinical findings, prescribing appropriate treatment or referring the patient to specialty clinics, collaborating with physicians in other specialties on complex cases, and providing professional consultation, supervision, and collaborative medical support to other staff such as psychologists, advanced practical nurses, and social workers.

    The employee may be assigned as the prescribing team member for behavioral health delivery at a forward location within the footprint of a supported FORSCOM unit, providing early identification and treatment of soldiers with behavioral health issues and recommendations for disposition such as medical retirement or administrative separation, including higher‑level complexity cases such as PTSD, psychosis, bipolar, etc.

    • Provides training to residents by giving lectures, demonstrations, and conducting ward rounds.

    Incumbent directs quality‑assurance studies within his/her area of responsibility and makes decisions that have a serious impact on the lives of others, such as recommending hospitalization or determining a service member's fitness for duty, completing Medical Evaluation Board (MEB), Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL) evaluations, psychological autopsies, sanity boards, command consultations, and other administrative processes as required. The incumbent prepares reports of such evaluations according to applicable regulations and identifies patient treatment needs to arrange safe therapeutic outcomes.

    Incumbent accomplishes special program assignments such as training, program coordination, research, analysis, and consultation as required. Participates, supports, and assumes primary responsibility for specified assignments in Q.I. activities in the Psychiatry Service. Demonstrates an understanding of the requirements and benefits of TRICARE and can effectively communicate these to beneficiaries. Prepares and maintains convenience files, outpatient medical records, and inpatient record documentation in accordance with service and hospital SOPs.

    Employee prepares case summaries and other correspondence in a timely and effective fashion.

Qualifications
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Must be either Board Eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Must have completion of Residency in Psychiatry.
  • Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. (A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth‑pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre‑medical education in the U.S. and graduate education in a foreign country).
