Position

Purpose:

In Fort Worth ISD, a Structured English Teacher (SET) supports elementary ESL and Dual Language Newcomer students (0–2 years in US schools) and students at risk of Long-Term Emergent Bilingual status (5+ years in US schools with limited growth in TELPAS). The SET provides targeted, high-quality instruction to accelerate English language development through data-informed instruction, family engagement, and professional collaboration, and helps create a co-teaching environment where Emergent Bilingual students can thrive linguistically and academically.

Job Functions
  • Provides direct, engaging, and systematic lessons focused on foundational English skills (grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing) to support academic growth and language proficiency.
  • Prevent LTEB status by implementing proactive, research-based instructional strategies that accelerate English language acquisition and academic integration.
  • Promote a safe, conducive learning environment through co-teaching and small-group instruction.
  • Under the Elementary Emergent Bilingual team, develop and monitor a student caseload using district assessment data; adjust as needed.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to develop accessible Tier 1 instruction.
  • Facilitate language acquisition instruction for Elementary Emergent Bilingual students (reading, writing, speaking, listening).
  • Develop and monitor progress of ELD goals in collaboration with the teacher of record and LPAC committee.
  • Design instruction aligned to ELD goals within a co-teaching model to meet students’ needs based on language proficiency.
  • Collaborate with campus leadership to build school-wide capacity for Emergent Bilingual learners by facilitating professional development and planning sessions.
  • Assist with administration of state-m mandated testing for Emergent Bilinguals.
  • Facilitate progress monitoring of ELD instruction and interventions through FWIDS MTSS process.
  • Observe student behavior outside the classroom at designated times and take appropriate action when needed.
  • Attend training as needed; as requested by campus principal, coordinator, and/or director.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of District policies, Texas Education Code, and the Science of Reading.
  • Ability to work with office personnel, parents, and students in Emergent Bilingual programs.
  • Ability to establish supportive relationships with students; proficiency with spreadsheets, databases, and word processing; effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to conference with teachers, parents, and students; follow written or oral instructions; handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; strong interpersonal communication; ability to work in diverse collaborative teams.
Travel Requirements
  • Travel to district buildings and professional meetings as required.
