OverviewPerforms a variety of gear finishing operations that cannot be performed by machine. Hand grinds and hand finishes all types of gears, splines and sprockets to required tolerance. Uses hand or bench type power tools to deburr, chamfer, form radii and finish gears to blueprint specifications or verbal instructions. Selects grinding wheels and abrasive material to finish each gear tooth with care to avoid burning, nicking or marring surfaces.
Removes the correct amount of material at exact locations on each tooth. Makes salvage repairs and corrects inspection rejects in finishing all types of gears, splines and sprockets. May etch, stamp or mark work for identification.
- Hand finish gears, splines and sprockets to specified tolerances.
- Use hand or bench power tools to deburr, chamfer, form radii and finish gear teeth per blueprint or verbal instructions.
- Choose appropriate grinding wheels and abrasives; finish each gear tooth without overheating or damaging surfaces.
- Remove material precisely at required locations; perform salvage repairs and address inspection rejects.
- Etch, stamp or mark work for identification when required.

- One year of machine shop experience or one year of hand finishing of machined parts.
