Department Summary

UNT Health and Science Center grounds department is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, overall care and beautification of campus grounds. This includes all grass, trees, flowers, plants, parking garages, and parking lots.

Position Overview

Landscape or maintain grounds of property using hand or power tools or equipment. Perform a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging and raking and sprinkler installation.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the planting and care of trees, shrubbery, flowers, and grass.
  • Skill in the use of grounds keeping hand tools and equipment, in the operation of motorized and gas-operated equipment, and in the repair and maintenance of sidewalks and parking lots.
Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:

  • Three (3) or more years of experience in grounds maintenance, involving work in care of flowers, landscape, turf grass, irrigation, or related areas.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license.
Job Duties
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes.
  • Operate vehicles or powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twinaxle vehicles, snow blowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, sod cutters, or pruning saws.
  • Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Snow and ice removal.
  • Water lawns, trees, or plants, using portable sprinkler systems, hoses, or watering cans when necessary.
  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
Environmental Hazards
  • Elevated temperatures.
  • Exposure to fumes or airborne particles.
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts or vibration.
  • Low temperatures.
  • Noisy environments.
  • Outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Small and/or enclosed spaces.
  • Work with toxic or caustic chemicals.
