Equipment Mechanic I & II – Texas Department of Transportation
Join the Texas Department of Transportation as an Equipment Mechanic I or II. We are looking for a skilled technician to perform repair, maintenance, inspection, and troubleshooting of fleet vehicles and construction equipment.
Equipment Mechanic IPerform repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in the construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Employees perform work independently but refer unusual issues to supervisor.
Equipment Mechanic IIPerform advanced repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment. Inspect work performed by shop mechanics and contracted vendors. Provide independent work on assignments and refer unusual issues to supervisor.
Essential Duties – Equipment Mechanic I- Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
- Handle and dispose of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
- Check lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights, and parking lights.
- Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into the fleet information management system.
- Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
- Order, pick up, and deliver parts, materials, tools, and operate equipment and vehicles, including heavy equipment.
- Perform acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
- Perform annual state safety inspections on vehicles, including DOT required inspections.
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; move related items as required.
- Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios.
- Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Train less experienced technicians.
- Repair vehicle air conditioning systems.
- Troubleshoot, test and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.

- Experience:
2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. - Substitutions:
Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology; certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute may substitute for experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. - Substitutions:
Same as Equipment Mechanic I.
- Valid driver's license; position requires driving a state vehicle.
