Position Title

Bus Driver – Transportation (Part-Time)

Position Purpose

Operates school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and other designated locations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Vehicle Operation
    • Drives bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
    • Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.
    • Anticipates problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions and schedule changes and makes necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
    • Performs pre‑ and post‑trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
    • Keeps assigned bus clean and maintains appropriate level of fuel.
    • Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries and mechanical problems and completes required corresponding reports.
    • Operates and monitors two‑way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
    • Ensures that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
    • Completes and maintains accurate, up‑to‑date, and timely records and reports including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption and number of passengers.
    • Attends and participates in trainings and other career/professional development opportunities.
  • Student Management
    • Instructs students on safe entry, exiting and passenger rules and regulations.
    • Supervises students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.
    • Maintains discipline in a courteous manner and uses effective behavior management control over groups of students.
    • Reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrators and communicates with teachers and parents regarding student’s behavior when warranted.
  • Safety
    • Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time.
    • Ensures all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes.
    • In case of accidents/emergencies evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed and completes a written report as required.
    • Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
    • Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses and reflector.
    • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports conditions not immediately correctable to supervisor; reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
    • Maintains Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.

    • Performs all job‑related duties as assigned and in accordance with Board rules, policies and regulations. All employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations and Texas rules of the road.
  • Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs and related information.
  • Knowledge of how to conduct pre‑/post trip inspections.
  • Skill in time management and problem solving.
  • Skill in reading a map.
  • Skill in maintaining composure and performing responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  • Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience and courtesy.
