Position: Temp FT (1.0) Learning Assistance Teacher (2026-27)

Position Description

A temporary full time (1.0) Learning Assistance Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The assignment will be rney Middle School.

Dr. Kearney Middle School is a vibrant middle school offering classes in grades 7-9. We enroll a diverse student population of 600, 25% of whom are of Indigenous descent. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee and a supportive parent community. Our school is committed to student-centered learning, a focus on collaborative planning, and a caring environment to provide quality education.

Qualifications And Experience
  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects at the middle years level
  • Experience with universal design and differentiation to meet the diverse needs of students
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration and organization skills
  • Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning. Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging
  • Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn
  • Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short‑term and long‑term in consideration of class composition
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning
  • Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are pro‑active and maintain student dignity
  • Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity
  • Masters in Special Education or working towards
  • Ability/experience to carry out a variety of assessment, including classroom observation, administration and interpretation of norm‑referenced assessment instruments, curriculum‑based assessments, and diagnostic teaching methods
  • Ability to implement extensive Individual Education Programs (IEP's) (detailing adaptations and modifications) in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students and district resource personnel
  • Ability/experience to support students designated with Chronic Health, Autism, FASD
  • Ability to support teachers within adapted classes in literacy, numeracy and science
  • Wide range of teaching and management strategies
  • Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of special needs
  • Ability/expertise to work with students either individually or in small groups or in a classroom setting
  • Flexible schedule to chair meetings outside of regular school hours
  • Experience/knowledge of UDL practices in the classroom
  • Advocacy for and empathy with students with special needs
  • Ability to work with students experiencing learning difficulties
  • Ability/expertise to collaborate with classroom teachers and team‑teach when warranted to support the learning of special needs students
  • Commitment to pursue professional development in special education
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with the special education department and school administration
  • Experience/knowledge of PBIS supports
  • Experience/knowledge of AFL practices
  • Excellent organization skills, efficient data collection, and ability to meet district timelines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with parents, the school‑based team and others to support students

Compensation
  • $2,000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4,000 for teachers from other areas
  • $3,035 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $65,397 - $111,952
