Canalta Elementary SchoolCanalta Elementary School is a K-7 school located on the western edge of the City of Dawson Creek with a beautiful view of Newby Park and open fields. We have a student population of approximately 225 students. Canalta has a positive and vibrant culture with a strong focus on relationships.
Our Staff consists of skilled, positive, and supportive professionals. We take priority in improving student achievement and well‑being through high quality instruction, while honouring diversity and equity. At Canalta we value not only academic learning, but the development of social‑emotional development of all our learners. Staff participate in on‑going professional development and learning and a continuous cycle of examining achievement data and putting tiered interventions in place for students.
We are also proud of our music program which further enhances the experiences of our students.
Our school offers extracurricular activities including comic book club, Lego club, intermediate volleyball, and basketball teams. Student Leadership groups undertake many jobs such as daily announcements, running our weekly PAWS draw, recycling, leading school assemblies, lunch monitoring, and buddy classes. Canalta has a very active parent group who work closely with staff and provide special opportunities for our students.

Required Qualifications And Experience- Hold, or be qualified for, a valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate
- Successful K-12 teacher training and practicum or evaluation documentation
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Experience with adapting, and modifying, curriculum to meet the needs of students
- Ability to develop and implement individualized learning plans for students with diverse needs
- Strong classroom management skills
- Experience working with students who display a variety of behaviours
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills
- Willingness to work and implement school initiatives and goals
- Capacity to work independently and in collaboration with a team
- Committed to individualized and group instruction utilizing a variety of effective strategies and techniques
- Experience teaching in a multiage group setting
- Engages in fair, student focused assessment practices consistent with the BC curriculum and reporting order, and reflects on evidence of learning to guide instruction
Collaboration, support, contemporary learning spaces and resources are part of the fabric of School District No. 59. Professional Learning Communities, Foundations for Learning and regular professional development are available and readily accessible for all teachers.
The houses thousands of physical and electronic resources for teachers. Additional human resources available to all teachers include support for literacy, numeracy, Aboriginal Education, resource acquisition (Resource Center staff), and student support services.
