Position: Specialty Education, Registered Nurse (rn), Maternity

Position Summary

Do you have a passion for nursing? Do you want to extend your nursing knowledge? We have a training opportunity that may interest you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team in the Maternity department at Fort St. John Hospital.

Under the direction of the Maternity Unit Head Nurse, provides appropriate nursing care to patients as assigned.

Northern Health Regional Perinatal Training Program Details

There are 4 training positions available for 2025/2026.

  • Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required.
  • Learners should expect to make a 4-6 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning.
  • Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, will be required to successfully complete the program.
  • Flexibility for practicums is necessary.
  • Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department.
  • Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
  • Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided.
Shift Rotation/Hours of work

Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00

Fort St. John Hospital and Health Centre

Fort St. John Hospital and Health Centre has 44 Acute Care beds and 124 residential beds and is equipped to handle 22,000 ER visits per year.

  • Endoscopy suite, 2 state-of-the‑art operating rooms, plus a procedure room
  • Ambulatory clinics including Cancer and Hemodialysis
  • Medical and Surgical inpatient rooms (40 beds)
  • 3 Intensive care units
  • Minor surgeries
  • 7 single Maternity rooms for Labour, Delivery, and Post‑Partum

Fort St. John also has the Health Unit and Primary Care Clinic which serve the community.

Qualfications
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
  • Must have successfully completed post‑graduate course in obstetrics.
  • Current CPR, IV Therapy and Blood Glucose Monitoring and Neonatal Resuscitation and Obstetrical examination certificates mandatory.
  • Two years continuous full‑time experience on an obstetrical unit including labour and delivery.
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment such as blood pressure and oxygen saturation and fatal monitors.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specialized procedures and techniques such as induction of labour, obstetrical examination and assessment and fetal monitoring.
