Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Licensed Practical Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at the Fort St. John Hospital. Under the general supervision of Manager or designate, the LPN works closely with the care team in direct care activities such as assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating interventions, and coordinating health services for Emergency Department patients.

The role participates in discharge and/or care planning, functions as a patient advocate, and teaches patients and families about illness, injury, and overall health promotion and wellness. The LPN enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family, establishes, maintains, and enhances therapeutic relationships based on respect, and provides care to patients across the lifespan based on stable and/or predictable states of health.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from a recognized program for Practical Nurses and one (1) year recent experience working in a related area of care.
  • Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrate ability in nursing practice related to caring for patients in the Emergency Department, including those across the lifespan with reliable and predictable states of health.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pathophysiology related to common diagnoses for designated patient groups such as malignancies, respiratory illness, renal failure, hepatic failure, gastrointestinal illness, chronic wounds, orthopedic injuries, mental health and substance use issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform nursing assessments and interventions related to common diagnoses and specific clinical situations relevant to the designated patient group, including wound care, venipuncture, diabetes management, orthopedic injuries, pediatrics, mental health, substance use, and safe medication practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound clinical judgments to provide safe ethical patient care and to recognize and manage potential complications, alerting the RN or responsible provider as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage conflict situations and aggressive behavior, using non-violent crisis intervention, behavioral management techniques, and processes specific to the Emergency Department to mitigate violence.
  • Demonstrated ability to use equipment correctly and maintain competency in working with equipment such as oxygen delivery systems, vital signs monitors, glucometers, IV pumps, splints, dressings, and walking aids.
  • Demonstrated ability to document patient care on appropriate systems/forms in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safe and appropriate telephone consultations and document the related discussions.
  • Demonstrated skills in patient/family centered care planning, engagement and education, trauma‑informed care, and therapeutic communication, with knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and the impact of social, cultural, and family systems on health outcomes.
  • Demonstrated competence in performing the LPN scope of practice and standards of care relevant to the designated patient population in the Emergency Department, including infection control, violence prevention, collaboration, communication, and patient flow.
  • Physical ability to perform the required duties.
