Job Title: Dimensional Engineer
Location: Foster City, CA 94404
Duration: 6+ Months (extendable)
Pay rate range: $85.00 - $91.00/hour

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Own dimensional requirements from early design through production launch for assigned vehicle systems or commodities
  • Develop and maintain 3D tolerance analysis (DVA) models to predict variation and assess design robustness
  • Define and validate GD&T schemes aligned with functional and manufacturing intent
  • Partner with Design Engineering to influence part geometry, locators, and interfaces to meet dimensional and craftsmanship targets
  • Support top-down and bottom-up dimensional integration, ensuring alignment with vehicle-level requirements
  • Review and approve drawings, CAD releases, and engineering changes from a dimensional standpoint
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering on fixture concepts, locating strategies, and build assumptions
  • Support Quality and Manufacturing teams during issue resolution, including gap/flush, fit, and alignment concerns
  • Analyze build and measurement data (CMM, scan data, build reports) to validate models and drive corrective actions
  • Lead or support dimensional root cause analysis, proposing effective countermeasures and design or process improvements
  • Present dimensional status, risks, and recommendations in design and program reviews
  • Support supplier discussions related to dimensional feasibility, tolerance capability, and corrective actions
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field
  • 7-8 years of experience in dimensional engineering, tolerance analysis, or geometric integration within automotive or other high-volume manufacturing environments
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) with demonstrated application on production-intent designs
  • Hands-on experience with 1D/3D tolerance analysis tools, such as 3

    DCS
  • Proven experience supporting programs from concept through production launch, including detailed design, DV, PV, and SOP
  • Ability to interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and build strategies to define robust dimensional requirements
  • Demonstrated experience working cross-functionally with Design Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, and Suppliers
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including dimensional root cause analysis and corrective action development
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical requirements, risks, and trade-offs to diverse stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing process capability and material-driven tolerances across common automotive components, including:
    • Stampings (steel and aluminum): spring back, forming variation, trim tolerance, and hemming effects
    • Castings (HPDC, LPDC, sand): draft, wall‑thickness variation, shrink, machining stock, and post‑machining datums
    • Injection‑molded plastics: material shrink, warpage, fiber orientation, tooling condition, and environmental influences
    • Extrusions: profile variation, twist, bow, and cut‑length tolerances
  • Ability to translate material behavior and process capability into realistic GD&T schemes and tolerance assumptions during design
  • Experience assessing supplier manufacturing feasibility and tolerance capability during sourcing and design reviews
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an automotive OEM or Tier‑1 supplier environment
  • Experience owning or contributing to DVA / DVP / black‑box tolerance models, including compliant (flexible) part modeling to represent real‑world assembly behavior
  • Hands‑on experience modeling part compliance, locator strategies, and assembly sequence effects using 3D tolerance analysis tools (3

    DCS)
  • Ability to apply compliant modeling techniques to assess gap/flush, fit, and functional performance of flexible components such as stampings, plastic trims, seals, and closures
  • Knowledge of fixture strategy, locating schemes, and building sequence development
  • Experience supporting closures, BIW, interior, or exterior systems
  • Familiarity with craftsmanship targets, including flush, gap, and visual quality requirements
  • Experience supporting low‑volume programs or new product launch environments
