Position Summary

The police officers of the Mass Bay Department of Public Safety are armed law enforcement professionals. The ideal candidate will join a vibrant educational community, serve a population of students with various needs and backgrounds, patrolling campuses and buildings, assisting the college community proactively, providing a police presence, conducting investigations, and acting to achieve crime prevention and community safety.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
  • Patrol buildings and grounds on foot or in a patrol vehicle to ensure security and guard against trespassing, theft, damage, fire, and injury.
  • Enforce state laws and institution rules; restrain or arrest suspects when necessary.
  • Aid courts in the prosecution of cases.
  • Enforce campus traffic and safety regulations.
  • Investigate crimes, traffic accidents and other matters; identify responsible individuals; apprehend offenders and participate in court proceedings when appropriate.
  • Protect state and federal constitutional guarantees.
  • Facilitate the movement of people and activities.
  • Identify serious problems to the campus and law enforcement.
  • Create and maintain a feeling of security in the community.
  • Promote and preserve civil order.
  • Provide other emergency services.
  • Perform duties as required by the Chief of Police or designee.
  • Perform all duties in conformance with policies and procedures in departmental manuals.
  • Other duties as assigned within the Campus Police Officer classification.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Eligible for certification as a police officer by POST-C after satisfying all requirements.
  • Successfully satisfy all MPTC prescreening, physical fitness, and endurance tests.
  • Successfully complete or be eligible for an official MPTC exemption to an approved basic police training academy.
  • U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old at the start of training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (HiSET/GED).
  • Pass a pre‑employment medical exam.
  • Pass an extensive background investigation and CORI check; no felony convictions; no certain misdemeanor convictions.
  • Acknowledge mandated duties as a Responsible Employee (RE) under Title IX and as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).
  • Successfully complete a psychological exam and be declared fit for duty.
  • Obtain and maintain a MA license to carry (LTC‑A).
  • Possess a current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Pass a drug and/or alcohol test.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Sensitivity and commitment to affirmative action goals.
  • Experience working in a community college or similar environment.
  • Commitment to working with students in need.
  • Graduated from an approved MPTC full‑time police academy or equivalent training.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
  • Previous law enforcement, security, or equivalent military experience.
  • Current CPR and First Responder certifications.
  • Bilingual.
Additional Information

Salary Range: AFSCME Unit II, Grade 16, Step 7, $68,874.04 annually. Appointments from outside the bargaining unit begin at Step 1 of the range.
