Operating Room First Assistant

The First Assistant is responsible for providing patient care of the surgical patient under the direction of the Surgeon.

• Assist in preparing the operating room and performing assigned support duties during surgical procedures, including turnover of the OR room.
• Check all instruments for workability prior to usage, displaying knowledge of instrument set.
• Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization, selecting appropriate retraction instrument and technique.
• Assist in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, application of appropriate surgical instruments, placement of ties, suture ligatures, chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures directed by the surgeon.
• Assist with resuscitation of patient during cardiac arrest or other life‑threatening events in the operating room.
• Perform any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed necessary and as directed by the surgeon.

• Current KY licensure or National Certification as an Orthopedic Physician Assistant, Certified ORT or RN Licensure, or Doctorate of Medicine corresponding with education obtained.
• High school diploma or GED required; graduate of accredited programs in Physician Assistant, Certified Operating Room Technician (ORT), RN, MD.
• Current BLS certification required.
• One-year surgical assistant experience preferred.
• Must be competent in first‑assisting responsibilities in an OR setting.
