KY Public Health Ameri Corps members will become Community Health Workers (CHW) to serve in any or all of the following core public health programs within Local Health Departments:
1) WIC, or the Special Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants and Children: provides nutritional counseling, healthy foods, breastfeeding support and referrals to additional resources.
2) HANDS, a voluntary home visitation program for moms, dads and families. HANDS members answer questions and provide parents with support in developing a parent-child relationship at no cost to the family.
3) Harm Reduction:
Harm Reduction Syringe Service Programs (HRSSP) are community-based programs that provide access to sterile needles and syringes, safe disposal of used syringes, and other comprehensive harm reduction services.
4) Health Education and Outreach: promote health health department initiatives through education efforts within the community, through events and one-on-one encounters with individuals.
