The R&D Senior Scientist reports directly to the Senior R&D Manager and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied material sciences within the Specimen Management R&D organization. The role drives innovation activities such as technology scouting, technical feasibility studies, strengthening IP position and contributing to new product development pipeline.
Primary Duties, Responsibilities & Authorities- Represents the R&D function as an Extended Team member in support of large technology and product development programs and may also support projects with less complexity as a Core Team member.
- Designs and executes experiments that explore technical feasibility, further the development, verification, and evidence generation efforts across all assigned programs and projects.
- Documents and builds technical knowledge within assigned business areas; explores and recommends solution concepts and principles when applicable.
- Drives key aspects of product development work streams including but not limited to Requirements Management, Design Verification, and Design Transfer to Manufacturing for applicable assignments.
- Ensures program success by working cross‑functionally with R&D‑Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory Affairs.
- Participates in intellectual property growth; submits patent applications and Invention Disclosure Records.
- Works under general direction and independently determines or develops approach to solutions.
- Adheres to Good Laboratory Practices, all relevant lab operational procedures, and actively participates in maintaining the setting and functionality of the IDS Analytical laboratories and equipment.
- Mentor and train junior team members and foster a collaborative work environment.
- Travels as required to conferences, manufacturing sites, customer visits, etc.
- Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field is required.
- Sound knowledge of material science and engineering principles
- Working experience in medical device industry
- Familiar with design control process and medical device regulations
- Knowledge of method validation and Six Sigma methodology is preferred
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good technical judgement and ability to convince others
- Ability to work in a cross‑functional environment
- Self‑motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands‑on work
- Expected to become proficient in specific core competency areas (e.g., biological sciences, material sciences for FTIR, DSC, HPLC)
- Experience with handling clinical specimens (particularly human blood) is desired; blood borne pathogen safety training is necessary and will be provided.
- Priorite on‑site collaboration: minimum 4 days of in‑office presence per week; remote or field‑based positions will have different arrangements.
