Medical Laboratory Technician
Job Description
This role performs routine and complex laboratory testing with a high level of accuracy and reliability, working with minimal supervision in a hospital-based clinical laboratory. The Medical Laboratory Technician follows established technical procedures, operates a variety of laboratory instruments, and ensures that all testing complies with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position also supports quality improvement initiatives, assists with training, and provides timely and accurate information to internal and external customers.
Responsibilities
+ Perform routine and complex laboratory tests of moderate to high complexity in one primary section of the clinical laboratory.
+ Perform additional routine and complex laboratory tests of moderate to high complexity in other designated sections of the laboratory.
+ Provide accurate and timely laboratory results and information to meet the needs of the departments customers and support patient care.
+ Maintain laboratory equipment by performing scheduled, preventive, and diagnostic maintenance in accordance with laboratory procedures and manufacturer user manuals.
+ Participate in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance activities as directed, including operations improvement initiatives.
+ Independently perform quality control procedures, document results, investigate and resolve abnormal quality control findings, and notify appropriate supervisory personnel as needed.
+ Evaluate current laboratory practices and recommend improvements to enhance productivity and reduce expenses, communicating suggestions to the Section Head.
+ Assist in the evaluation of new laboratory equipment and monitor the purchasing of laboratory supplies and inventory control.
+ Provide technical guidance and support to customers regarding laboratory procedures, test interpretation, and operational questions.
+ Attend designated meetings inside and outside the organization and participate in professional activities and continuing education to maintain and enhance professional expertise.
+ Perform other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations and patient care.
+ Clearly communicate and consistently support the organizations mission and values in daily work.
+ Conduct all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and hospital policies and procedures, including Blood and Body Substance Precautions and Equal Opportunity policies.
Essential Skills
+ Bachelors degree in medical technology or in a chemical, physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university for Medical Technologist (MT) roles.
+ Completion of a training program in an approved school of medical technology or equivalent applicable experience for MT roles is highly preferred.
+ Associates degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from an accredited institution is required for MLT roles.
+ One year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician is preferred.
+ Certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or equivalent (such as ASCP or equivalent) is preferred.
+ Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent is preferred.
+ Experience in blood bank operations and testing.
+ Generalist laboratory skills, including microbiology set-ups and some molecular testing.
+ Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex laboratory data.
+ Proficiency with computer systems and hospital information systems used in clinical laboratories.
+ Thorough understanding of laboratory operations, including routine and specialized techniques and procedures in clinical laboratory science.
+ Ability to operate moderate and complex laboratory equipment, including chemistry, hematology, and coagulation analyzers, centrifuges, cell washers, and related instruments.
+ Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations governing clinical laboratory operations, including CLIA and CAP-related standards.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with colleagues, providers, and other customers.
+ Ability to read and interpret documents, instrument results, and laboratory policies with a high level of accuracy.
+ Strong problem-solving and reasoning abilities to evaluate data and resolve technical issues.
+ Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
