Crisis Response and De-escalation
- Utilize SECURE de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques during crisis situations.
- Apply de-escalation practices within the BHU as directed by the Charge Nurse or BHU Leadership.
- Assist with physically combative patients in accordance with CMS standards, ensuring patient dignity and safety.
- Participate in post-incident debriefings for both patients and staff.
- Respond to urgent safety concerns, including patient disruptions, system failures (e.g., flooding), Ambulance and other emergency vehicle arrivals, and other emergencies.
- Assist in patient escorts to and from facilities.
- Assist with patient intake and dismissal as needed.
The use of restraint or seclusion interventions must never act as a barrier to the provision of safe and appropriate care, treatment, or other interventions to meet the needs of the patient. CMS does not consider the use of weapons in the application of restraint as a safe or appropriate healthcare intervention. BHU Security staff who are Law Enforcement Officers may not carry weapons within the BHU.
“Weapons” include, but are not limited to: pepper spray, mace, nightsticks, Tasers, cattle prods, stun guns, and firearms. The use of weapons is not considered a healthcare intervention and, if used, the incident will be handled as a law enforcement matter. Offenders should be turned over to local authorities.
- Conduct regular rounds of interior and exterior BHU areas, checking for unsecured doors, equipment issues, and general safety.
- Round in patient care areas to help ensure adherence to safety protocols, unit rules, and Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) policies.
- Patrol parking areas, especially during shift changes, to support staff safety.
- Document and report all findings and shift activity accurately.
- Secure and release doors during normal operations and emergency situations.
- Assist with safe movement of patients, staff, and visitors during emergency events.
- Perform physical security screenings to maintain a safe environment.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance observations, such as monitoring and testing alarms.
- Monitor snow accumulation and notify Plant Operations management when necessary.
- Investigate and report suspicious individuals, activities, and abandoned vehicles JMH Security Officers.
- Verify identification when appropriate.
- Respond to suspicious activity and work with JMH Security Officers when needed.
- Provide safe escort services for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Conduct foot patrols of JMH properties.
- Respond promptly and professionally to all calls for service.
- Respond to and assist in investigations involving criminal activity or vehicle incidents on hospital property.
- Maintain accurate and detailed reports, records, and activity logs.
- Enforce JMH rules and policies through professional interaction with patients, staff, and visitors.
- Provide guidance and clear direction to others while maintaining professionalism.
Participate in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance initiatives as directed.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:High School Diploma/GED is required. At least 1 year of relevant experience required. Current non-restricted Indiana Driver’s License required. Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) to be obtained within 6 months of hire. Physical Security Professional (PSP), or Certified Protection Officer (CPO) certification preferred. Previous medical or hospital experience preferred.
Shift: 7pm-7:30am; 72 Hours per two-week pay period.
