- Layout of borings and test pits using conventional surveying and GPS, including observation and classification of test pits and soils.
- Perform hand auger borings, DCP testing, soil logging, and other geotechnical field work.
- Classify samples obtained from drilling operations and reduce GPS and geotechnical data for utilization and production.
- Support department administrative duties and work in the construction materials testing department as needed.
- Work on active construction sites, observing, testing, sampling and inspecting soil, aggregates, concrete, grout, masonry, asphalt and structural steel placement.
- Under the direction of staff professionals/project managers, perform routine field and laboratory tests and assist with more complex tasks.
- Calculate and reduce test results, and draft reports as required.
- Communicate daily with site contractors, technicians and project managers.
- Document findings in accordance with accepted engineering practice.
- Participate in training and certification programs (ACI, ASNT, AWS, ICC, NICET, NRCA, IIBEC, State DOTs, WACEL, etc.) as opportunities arise.
- High school diploma or GED; BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university preferred.
- 0–2 years of experience in geotechnical field work or related construction support.
- Ability to handle, reach, climb, crouch, stoop, crawl, kneel and sit for prolonged periods.
- Good visual and proprioceptive acuity and the ability to drive hundreds of miles per day as required.
- Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 40–70 lb, and occasionally lift 85 lb to waist height.

The employee will be regularly exposed to outside weather conditions (wet, humid, extreme cold or heat), dusty and noisy work environments. Noise levels are moderate to moderately loud, and employees may work at high, precarious places. Some weekend and overtime work, as well as overnight travel, may be required.
Physical RequirementsThese demands reflect typical field work on construction sites involving long-term standing, repetitive motions and loading of equipment up to 100 lb (e.g., a loaded wheelbarrow). Employees should possess the strength and agility necessary to perform the duties described.
