Adjunct, ILR

Job Description: This position will be responsible for teaching non‑credit courses for the Institute for Learning in Retirement Program (ILR) within the Continuing Education and Workforce Development Department at Frederick Community College. ILR Adjunct Faculty shall teach proposed and/or assigned courses approved by the program manager and director. Instructors generally teach 1 to 2 courses a term based upon their area of expertise.

Courses vary in length and do not follow traditional semester semesters. Courses taught are generally proposed by the instructor as this program has no set curriculum. Area of expertise should be clearly outlined in their application, cover letter, or resume. Course topics taught in this program include:

  • Computer and Technology
  • Health and Fitness
  • History, Cultures, and Current Issues
  • Hobbies and Languages
  • Learning on Location trips
  • Life Planning and Finances
  • Literature, Theater, and Writing
  • Philosophy, Religion, and Exploration
  • Science and Nature
  • The Arts and Music
Responsibilities
  • Propose courses and plan detailed, relevant, progressive lesson plans to engage students.
  • Provide course descriptions and learning objectives to the Program Manager.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to meet the various needs and levels of students.
  • Provide instruction using appropriate and effective technology, standards of delivery, and a variety of methods on instruction.
  • Actively engage students in discussion and critical thinking.
  • Cultivate open‑minded inquiry.
  • Promote cooperation and mutual respect among students.
  • Infuse multicultural and diverse perspectives into the instructional processes as appropriate, and conduct classes in a manner that demonstrates respect for individual and cultural differences.
  • Participate in College training and professional development.
  • Complete orientation process for adjunct faculty, to include Title IX and other College Policy training.
  • Submit and update personnel forms required for employment.
  • Review FCC policies that apply to teaching.
  • Provide master copies or lists for instructional materials in a complete and timely manner to allow preparation and distribution.
  • Provide timely notice if unable to attend class or scheduled meetings.
  • Submit class evaluations and other documents as directed by program staff.
  • Participate as required in the student complaint process.
  • Support the stated mission, policies, and procedures for Frederick Community College.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Appropriate education level (will vary based on the course teaching)
  • Previous experience teaching
  • Basic computer skills necessary for utilizing technology in the classroom
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or PhD
  • Previous experience teaching at a post‑secondary level
  • Experience teaching to students who are aged 55+
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to use varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace
