Job Summary

The Tennis Aide is a non-graded, part-time entry-level position responsible for assisting the tennis instructor in providing safe, effective, motivating group tennis instruction for participants in City of Frederick-sponsored recreation programs. Under general supervision of the Tennis Instructor, Tennis Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor, the Tennis Aide will monitor and encourage class participation and assist participants with tennis technique. This individual is responsible for presenting a positive, professional and competent image of The City of Frederick and the Recreation Department by assisting the Tennis Instructor to deliver quality instruction to meet the diverse needs of the community.

Responsibilities
  • Assists Tennis Instructor with administrative tasks such as taking attendance and verifying receipt of program waivers
  • Works all assigned hours as designated by program schedule and supervisor
  • Remains understanding, compassionate and courteous to program participants
  • Is prepared and capable of assisting with all aspects of program
  • Assists instructor with various aspects of program instruction
  • Assists with the maintenance of all program supplies, including storage and set up/Notifies supervisor of any shortages
  • Maintains open communication with all staff, program participants, parents and Recreation Supervisor
  • Distributes all appropriate program materials, including t-shirts, certificates, supplies, awards, etc. to participants at designated time
  • Assists Instructor with ensuring proper completion of all necessary accident forms
  • Maintains focus on a safe program environment conducive to learning
  • Assists with providing a safe, positive and fun learning environment and well-being of program participants
  • Delivers excellent customer service with a focus on the well-being of program participants
  • Performs other duties as directed by tennis coordinator/instructors or recreation supervisor

Required

Education and/or Experience
  • A minimum of 14 years of age

    NOTE:

    A work permit is required for all minors under the age of 18 to work in the State of Maryland.
  • Prior experience playing the sport of tennis
Required Skills
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in the English language at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations
  • Ability to use program equipment and materials properly
  • Ability to meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public
  • Basic computer skills in a Windows environment, including MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel
  • Organizational skills
  • Strong customer service focus
  • Ability to exercise patience and good verbal communication to effectively convey ideas and information
  • Knowledge of basic tennis technique
Preferred Skills
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Physical Requirements

The job typically requires the jobholder to stand for long periods of time and to move about, bend, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, and lift. The worker may occasionally sit on the ground. The jobholder must have the ability to use fingers and hands to feel, grasp, to extend hands and arms in any direction, and to exhibit manual dexterity.

The worker must have the ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Vision requirements: the worker is required to have visual acuity to play the game of tennis. Specific vision abilities require close vision, distance vision (with or without correction), color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Hearing requirements: the employee must have the ability to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.

Work Environment

Job duties are normally performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions to include wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat. Program activities may also occur indoors in a controlled setting. The noise level in the environment is typically moderate.
