Work Year Calendar and
Hours:
10‑month position (190 days per year), 7 hours per day. Daily work hours vary by location.
Salary: Support Salary Scale Grade S15: $35.85 per hour, starting. Position is non‑exempt under the Fair Labor and Standards Act; actual salary will be based on the full salary scale.
RoleThe Educational Interpreter II provides sign language services for students, faculty, staff, families, and community stakeholders eligible to receive such services through FCPS.
Essential Functions- When interpreting for a student:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the sender in the communication mode determined by the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) team.
- Interprets/transliterates situations outside the classroom as appropriate and assigned.
- Fosters appropriate use of an interpreter in a variety of settings.
- When interpreting for all other stakeholders eligible to receive interpreting services:
- Interprets/transliterates information, accurately conveying the thought, intent, and spirit of the message in the communication mode preferred by the stakeholder.
- Coordinates facility logistics, positioning self optimally for clear line of sight, lighting, and background.
- Advocates the use of closed captioning and other technology devices.
- Maintains and pursues professional growth: prepares by familiarizing with topical content and technical vocabulary; collaborates with other interpreters; attends professional development sessions provided by FCPS.
- Provides educators general information about social, emotional, and cultural aspects of students who are deaf/hard of hearing; shares best practices; attends IEP team meetings or provides information when requested.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Fluent in sign language.
- Completion of an interpreter training program from a higher education institution, or three (3) years of successful experience as a sign language interpreter.
- Certification from one or more of the following:
Registry of the Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS), Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), National Association of the Deaf (NAD). - Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Background in an educational setting.
- Classroom interpreting experience.
- Familiarity with FCPS policies, goals, and programs.
