Job DescriptionThe CNC Programmer/Machinist is responsible for, setting up, operating, and maintaining advanced CNC machining equipment within the XTAC Workshop Facility. This role supports the manufacturing of high-precision components and contributes directly to engineering and testing activities. The position requires strict adherence to safety protocols, accurate data collection, and proactive equipment care to ensure consistent, high-quality output. This position will report to the Workshop Manager.
Responsibilities- Lead the execution of core tasks and responsibilities without supervision.
- Understand shop safety and PPE requirements.
- Write SOPs and design/custom build fixtures.
- Expert in multi‑axis machining strategies (spiral, swarf cutting, complex surface blending) with tolerances of +-.0002 and 16
Ra surface finish. - Reverse engineer parts from a sample only.
- Diagnose and resolve complex machine controller issues and post‑processor errors.
- Develop CNC programs using CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, etc.) and operate dual‑spindle lathes and 5‑axis mills.
- Perform machining operations (milling, turning, drilling, tapping, reaming, boring, broaching).
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, GD&T symbols, and technical specifications.
- Collaborate with engineers and teams to implement new processes and tooling concepts.
- Conduct in‑process and final inspections using precision measurement tools.
- Document all work activities clearly and completely.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and minor repairs.
- Assist in training new team members on machine operation, shop practices, and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area in compliance with safety and 5S/lean standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned by manager.
- 15+ years of relevant experience in CNC programming and machine setup.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX, or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve routine machine, tooling, and programming issues independently.
- Experience using precision measuring devices and inspection tools.
- Ability to collect, record, and organize technical data with a high degree of accuracy.
- Familiarity with industrial safety practices, emergency procedures, and hazardous‑materials handling.
- Ability to work with common hand tools and basic shop equipment.
- Competence with basic computer applications and electronic data entry systems.
- Ability to push, pull, move, or lift at least 50 lbs.
- Willingness to obtain relevant technical and safety certifications (OSHA‑30, forklift, hazardous materials, OEM machine certifications).
- Expert‑level process planning from solid model to finished part.
- Subject‑matter expert on tooling technology.
- Capable of setting up for lights‑out minimal operator input machining.
- Experience with automation integration (robot tending, pallet systems, adaptive machining).
- Proficient with advanced inspection technology including CMM programming.
