Job Summary
The Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A) assists the Registered Nurse and interdisciplinary team in the safe delivery of quality patient care, while supporting unit operations. The C.N.A functions within the scope of practice outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing and adheres to the Frederick Health Compliance Program and Standards of Behavior.
Essential Functions- Collect and record routine health data, including cultural, religious, socioeconomic background, and activities of daily living.
- Orally report the health status data as required by the nurse.
- Provide feedback to the nurse regarding the nurse‑directed plan of care and the patient’s expressed wishes concerning the plan of care.
- Assist with activities of daily living as delegated by the nurse, including bathing, mouth care, hair care, shaving, and skin care.
- Reposition patients to prevent skin breakdown.
- Assist patients with meals, nourishment, and beverages.
- Perform interventions delegated by a registered nurse, such as hourly rounding (pain, potty, personal needs, possessions), blood glucose testing, vital signs, pulse oximetry, and simple wound care.
- Record routine data and care provided on appropriate documents.
- Identify the need for assistance and request help when unsure about a condition or activity.
- Report the patient’s response and progress to the nurse at designated times or when changes occur.
- Participate in quality of care activities, performance self‑appraisal, continued learning, collaboration, and completion of delegated assignments.
- Adhere to local, state, and federal guidelines regarding client confidentiality and privacy rights, directing all patient requests for information to the nurse.
- Advocate for the patient by reporting statements expressed by the patient or family concerning requests for information, concerns about care, and needs.
- Reinforce nursing health teaching as directed by written instruction, reporting patient responses.
- Complete mandatory education requirements for the hospital and department.
- Assist in orienting new employees to the department.
- Stay informed of unit/hospital events by reading minutes or attending staff meetings.
- Serve on committees and projects as necessary.
- Comply with all guidelines governing Certified Nursing Assistant practice and the C.N.A. code of ethics under COMAR 10.39.07.
- Perform activities safely and competently as assigned or delegated.
- Keep the department clean and orderly.
- Float to other units as assigned.
- Transport patients as needed.
- Perform duties of a patient care companion as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology.
- Ability to use technology and equipment to perform job duties.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proper use of body mechanics when handling patients, supplies, and equipment.
- Capability to work in a physically demanding environment.
- Skill and ability to perform all job duties for the age‑specific patient population served by the department.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing as required by Health Occupations Article Title 8‑6A‑01.
- Current CPR certification.

Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. For part‑time positions, salary is prorated. The hourly range for this position is $19.00–$27.77.
