The Frederick National Laboratory is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses urgent problems in biomedical sciences, including cancer and AIDS research, drug development, emerging infectious diseases, and nanotechnology applications in medicine.
Program DescriptionThe AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that pursues basic and applied studies to improve understanding of AIDS‑associated viruses and associated tumors. The program encompasses fundamental molecular virology, in‑vitro studies, in‑vivo non‑human primate (NHP) models, and international viral epidemiology. ACVP provides critical technical support to laboratories and extramural investigators.
Key Roles/Responsibilities- Provide logistical support for multiple laboratories: delivering/ordering supplies, shipping research samples, assisting with equipment failures, and relocating specimens and materials as needed.
- Transport and/or process potentially infectious blood and tissue specimens from human and non‑human primates.
- Operate laboratory equipment, including autoclaves for sterilization of waste, laminar flow hoods for tissue culture, and liquid nitrogen storage systems.
- Transport cryogenic liquids and maintain liquid nitrogen freezers.
- Assist with updating and maintaining detailed sample databases.
- Assist with sterile preparation/formulation, vialing, and labeling of medications for research studies.
- Perform other preventive maintenance duties as assigned.
- Independently perform tasks and learn new laboratory techniques, such as:
- Use of specialized laboratory instruments
- Perform delicate manual procedures as required
- Keep accurate data on experiments
- Follow and apply standard laboratory protocols and procedures
- Assist laboratory personnel with reliable, independent support to biomedical research or production units
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Possess general knowledge of systems utilized and program principles such as specialized laboratory techniques and procedures
- Sterilization techniques, scientific methods, the metric system, and standard instruments used in a laboratory
- May communicate with Facilities Maintenance Engineering and Occupational Health & Safety personnel
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university or four (4) years of relevant experience. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
- No work experience required with a Bachelor’s degree.
- Ability to routinely lift and carry 50 lbs.
- Ability to be on call to respond to equipment malfunction alarms within a short period of time.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
- Prior experience working with relevant laboratory equipment (pipettes, centrifuges, automated cell counters, rate‑controlled freezers).
- Prior experience safely handling potentially infectious materials in a laboratory setting.
- Position is subject to working with or exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations.

Payand Benefits
Salary range: 43,800.00 – 73,250.00 USD. The posted pay range is a general guideline. Additional factors considered include responsibilities, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, internal equity, and market data.
