Brompton Community School is seeking enthusiastic summer camp instructors who are passionate about working with children in grades K through 8, spending time outdoors, and fostering a love of learning. Instructors will be placed in camp programs based on their interests, experience, and program needs. Lesson plans and necessary materials will be provided. This is a seasonal position.

Camp Programs

The school offers a diverse range of summer camps:

Nature and Outdoor Programs
  • Critter Camp: Virginia wildlife and ecosystems
  • Bug Camp: Insect exploration and study
  • Fort Building Camp:
    Design, building, and outdoor construction; grades 3–8
  • Outdoor Arts & Crafts Camp: Inspired by 1000 Hours Outside
Enrichment and Academic Programs
  • Introduction to Music and Writing Camp
  • Fiber Arts Camp
  • Spanish Camp
  • Math Camp
  • YA Book Club
  • 2nd/3rd Grade Book Club
  • Chess Camp

Placement will be determined based on instructor strengths, interests, and camp needs.

Core Responsibilities
  • Implement provided lesson plans and use supplied materials.
  • Lead engaging, age-appropriate activities aligned with camp themes.
  • Create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all campers.
  • Adapt instruction for different grade levels and learning needs.
  • Foster curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.
  • Spend significant time outdoors, especially in nature-focused camps.
  • Model reverence for nature and care for the outdoor environment.
  • Manage classroom and/or outdoor learning spaces and materials.
  • Supervise campers during activities, transitions, and outdoor time.
  • Communicate appropriately with campers, parents, and camp leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with other camp staff.
  • Ensure camper safety and follow camp policies and procedures.
Qualifications Required
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a passion for working with children and supporting their learning.
  • Have an interest in teaching or teaching experience, such as student teaching, tutoring, or camp counseling.
  • Be enthusiastic about spending time outdoors.
  • Show appreciation for and reverence toward nature.
  • Be able to work effectively with elementary- and middle-school-aged students in grades K–8.
  • Be comfortable with physical activity and outdoor work.
  • Be flexible and willing to adapt to different camp environments.
Preferred
  • Background in education, child development, or a related field.
  • Previous experience working with children in educational or camp settings.
  • Expertise or a strong interest in one or more camp areas, such as nature studies, arts, academics, or outdoor skills.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn Virginia wildlife, ecosystems, and natural history.
  • First Aid/CPR certification, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Bilingual skills, especially Spanish.

This position involves both indoor and outdoor work, depending on camp placement. Instructors in nature and outdoor programs will spend the majority of their time outside and may experience varying weather conditions. All instructors should be comfortable with outdoor time, physical activity, and active supervision of campers. Reasonable accommodations can be provided as needed.

Compensation and Benefits
