Overview
Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C., is hiring Electric Power Generation (EPG) Apprentice Technicians in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The EPG Apprentice Technician program provides training and development to accurately troubleshoot and diagnose, inspect, maintain and repair engines and related electrical systems on generators and automatic transfer switches. At the end of this 15-month program, the apprentice is expected to understand engines, electrical and transfer switch fundamentals, in addition to NFPA
70E electrical safety procedures.
Requirements for the position include a High School diploma or GED; completion of a K-12 vocational program in Electrical or Mechanical related course; post-secondary diesel engine or related program or two years of mechanical job experience preferred; military equipment experience is a plus; proficiency in CAT electronic tools and software (e.g., SIS, ET) preferred, but training will be provided.
Responsibilities- Troubleshoot and diagnose problems on engines and related electrical systems used in generators and automatic transfer switches.
- Inspect, maintain, and repair engines and associated electrical systems; document work performed and parts used.
- Read and understand operating manuals; prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and time cards accurately and in a timely manner.
- Operate applicable equipment and uphold safe work practices; promote a positive customer experience.
- Meet deadlines and work with limited supervision as a self-starter.
- Be willing to work all shifts to meet customer needs.

- Proficient with computers, Microsoft Office, and service software; able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to document diagnoses and repairs; prepare required documentation accurately and timely.
- Ability to read operating manuals.
- Must be able to operate heavy equipment.
- Ability to work all shifts as needed.

- Training will be provided for CAT tools and software as needed.
Regularly stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; sit for extended periods. Frequently lift and/or move up to 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Program Completion and BenefitsUpon successful completion of the apprenticeship, you will receive accreditation from the Virginia Department of Labor, officially becoming a certified Construction Equipment Technician. Carter’s Apprenticeship Program is nationally recognized by the Federal Department of Labor and is accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia.
